Water Sports in Tenerife

As you would expect being an island, Tenerife has much to offer in terms of water sports. The crystalline waters make the island a perfect place for scuba diving and snorkeling, and the beaches with large waves are a favorite destination for surfers, windsurfers and kitesurfers worldwide. The island is located in an ideal place for water sports thanks to its weather and location.

Surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing
Surf is practiced on the island as a tradition, as well as windsurfing and kitesurfing. Tenerife has more than ten different schools and courses dedicated to these sports. The main areas for practicing these disciplines are in El Medano, Playa de Las Americas, the coast of Santa Cruz, Güímar, the coast of La Orotava and especially in Playa del Socorro in Los Realejos. There have also been numerous competitions for the World Cup in various disciplines.

Diving
As with surfing and windsurfing, there are many diving schools and clubs across the coast of Tenerife. In the island, there are up to thirty areas for diving where you can not only discover the unique flora and fauna, in some areas you can also explore sunken ships. Among the best places for scuba diving we have Las Galletas, Playa Paraíso and Punta de la Rasca in the South, and Garachico, Puerto de la Cruz or Punta de Teno in the north. A permanent colony of pilot whales, bottlenose dolphins and turtles will make you company under the sea 🙂

Swimming
It is one of the most popular sports on the island, either in a pool or in the sea. There is not only swimming, we also have water polo, with the Club Natación Martiánez competing in the Spanish National Waterpolo League, or even synchronized swimming and long distance swimming in open water. In Tenerife there are six teams in the swimming federation: CN Teneteide, CN Alameda, CN Echeyde, CD Teimar, CN Martiánez and CN Tenerife Master.

Navigation
Tenerife is well located in the center of the Canary Islands to offer all kinds of water sports such as sailing, motor boats or jet skis. We have the possibility to rent a yacht, join a sailing course, explore hidden areas of Tenerife and go to other islands such as La Gomera, La Palma and Gran Canaria. Some events are realized exclusively for competitors of the island, and others have competence in all the Canary Islands, Spain, or even internationally. The first training center for the Royal Yachting Association overseas was established in Tenerife and offers training in all kinds of navigation. There are also several sport fishing clubs in Tenerife and a fishing tournament in open water.
