Discovering the Teide National Park

  • Location and History:

With a diameter of 17 km, Teide National Park was shaped by the eruption of a gigantic volcano 170,000 years ago. Its magnificence is crowned by the imposing Teide volcano, soaring to an elevation of 3,718 meters, making it the highest peak in Spain. Imagine the excitement of reaching the summit via the Cable Car and enjoying breathtaking panoramic views! In fact, when measured from the ocean floor, Teide reaches a staggering height of 7,500 meters, ranking it as the world’s third-largest volcano. Nearby lies Pico Viejo, the second tallest volcano in the Canary Islands, standing at an altitude of 3,135 meters. This geological gem was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site on June 29, 2007, highlighting its ecological and scenic significance.

  • A Lunar Landscape:

Teide National Park surprises us with a landscape where volcanic cones and lava streams create an extraordinary contrast of colors and shapes, painting an almost lunar-like picture. The Roques de García, peculiar rock formations, stand out as the most popular and spectacular viewpoint. These unique pointed rocks, composed of various layers from different eruptions, remind us of scenes taken from another world.

To visit Teide, guided excursions on foot are organized, and it’s essential to reserve your spot at the Park’s office or inquire at the visitor centers. The ascent to the Rambleta can be done on foot or more easily and comfortably by using the Teide Cable Car. There are specific areas where access and the number of visitors are limited for conservation purposes. For the ascent to the summit, it’s essential to apply for an access permit.
