The island is divided into two parts: the well-known ‘Tenerife Sur‘, which is famous for its beautiful sunny weather, and the north with quite variable weather. The most popular northern towns are Puerto de la Cruz (where is situated the famous Loro Parque and Lago Martianez with a beautiful water park), La Orotava (a charming town with a Canarian traditional style, located close to the volcano El Teide), Los Realejos and Icod de los Vinos (where is the Drago – the world’s oldest “dragon” tree), Garachico (a picturesque town situated at the foot of the cliffs of La Culata, in this place filmed the movie “Fast and Furious 6”) and Buenavista (town situated at the foot of the mountain of Teno, recognized as Good for Cultural Heritage, here was made movie “Wrath of the Titans” and “Clash of the Titans”)

Many tourists choose Tenerife Sur, where usually the sun always shines. The most popular tourist towns of Tenerife Sur are: Los Cristianos, Las Americas, El Medano, Costa Adeje, Playa Paraiso and Las Galletas. But close to this part of Tenerife Sur there are many beautiful – but less popular – smaller towns. If you are not a big fan of the crowded tourist resorts and you would like to spend your holidays in a quieter place you can choose other different towns:
- Candelaria (& Las Caletillas) – is a nice town situated on the southeastern coast of Tenerife. It is a place of pilgrimage of catolic people from all over the archipelago and often visited by tourists. It is also called the City of the Virgin Mary, because here is located Basilica of Virgin of Candelaria. On the square the Basilica is a majestic 9 bronze figures depicting the last lords of the Guanches, who formerly ruled areas of Tenerife. There is also a cave Cueva de Chinguaro, which is considered the first Catholic church on the island. Tourists can use the volcanic beach of La Playa de Punta Large, Playa del Alcalde, as well as smaller Playa de La Arena and many bars and restaurants. From the city, you can quickly and easily get a bus to Santa Cruz or Los Cristanos , Las Americas.
- Puertito de Güimar – a town situated approx. 20 km from the capital city of Santa Cruz, which is also known as ‘El Puertito’. It is an ideal place for rest and relax. There is a couple of beaches, and the most beautiful of these is Playa del Cabezo. Puertito de Güimar is located near the larger town Gümair famous for their pyramids (as were built in Mexico by the Mayans and Aztecs). Near the town is located Malpais de Güimar – a great trekking trails, one runs along the ocean. There you can walk on solidified lava that flowed into the ocean and enjoy the beautiful views.
- Tabaiba -calm village located near Santa Cruz, belonging to the municipality of El Rosario. Its name refers to the plant species of the Euphorbia, which are known on the island as Tabaibas. From the city there are plenty of buses in the direction of Santa Cruz and the south of the island (airport, Los Cristanos. Costa Adeje etc.)
- Radazul – cozy haven thanks to its location is protected from the wind. Is located in the town of El Rosario. Available to the public is a beach Cangrejo Radazul with dark sand and amounting to 210 m. in length. It is close to the Puerto Deportivo de Radazul. This place it belongs to the peaceful and not too crowded by tourists. The water in this area is characterized by clarity and transparency, and near you can find a promenade, rent chairs and umbrellas, there is also children’s playground and many other tourist attractions. Here are also diving schools, car rentals, and in nearby bars and restaurants you can enjoy delicious fresh fruit juices and traditional Canarian dishes.
From all these towns you can go very easily to the capital of the island, as well as the popular tourist destinations in Tenerife Sur. Bus trip to Santa Cruz takes about 10 minutes, and to Los Cristianos, Las Americas around 40 min.
