Carnaval of Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands and also hosts the largest carnival in Europe. Such is the popularity of the Carnaval of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, that the city is often associated with Rio de Janeiro, the city with the world’s largest carnival.

The capital of Tenerife is home of the famous Carnaval every February or March, with a different main theme chosen from year to year. Recent topics have included horror movies, pirates, Hollywood musicals or magic, and for 2015 we have ‘the future’. This variety of topics provides a new and unique experience in each visit, with its main events during the weekend.

The streets are full of joy with homemade costumes that come to join the party. The atmosphere in the streets explodes in a flash of color and music, attracting visitors from all around the world. Whether visiting official organized events, or joining the street carnival, party continues until late every night and restarts the next morning with renewed enthusiasm.

Carnaval is widely seen as an event of the weekend, in fact there are many events in the last days of the week and in the following days until Fat Tuesday, marking the official end of Carnaval and the next day with the burial of the sardine, a theme party for Ash Wednesday, an experience that must be seen to believe!

The Queen of the Carnaval is the undisputed star of the event, with the prestigious award given to the most beautiful of the year the Wednesday before the beginning of the carnival. She becomes an icon during the year, representing the island and all activities related to the Carnival.
