Looking for a flat in Tenerife: 5 options

Renting a flat in Tenerife is quite easy with the right tools, we just have to search through specialized websites, real estate agencies, facebook groups or by making a safari in the area of the island where we are interested to live.

– Websites

In Spain there are websites with listings of all kinds as loquo or segundamano, but most-known specialized pages for housing services are fotocasa.es and idealista.com, both with countless ads for buying and selling houses or properties for rent nationwide, divided by regions, localities and all kinds of filters by price and type of housing. The best is to seek the area of interest, check that the price and conditions are adequate and call the owner to ask all the details or meet directly to see the flat or your future room.

– agencies

To avoid headaches thinking about contracts and long conversations that we are not going to get entirely clear, we can go to agencies that will help us throughout the process of finding our new home, showing all the choices available, meeting with the landlord and helping with the signing of the contract to have everything clear, and being able to contact the agency if there is any problem. All this obviously represents an extra cost, usually around 75 to 100% of a monthly fee, normally paid at the beginning with the first month payment and the deposit. They use to rent the whole apartment, not rooms. You can look for more info in metro-cuadrado.es

– Facebook groups

Many people who already live in Tenerife offer single or double rooms to divide expenses. We often find listings in the following groups of facebook:

In Spanish:

– Down the street

As in the rest of the world, we can walk around the area of the island where we would like to live and see firsthand the houses which are for rent by signs hanging from their windows or balconies. The only advantage of doing this is that we can see if the area is quiet and/or safe, if the building is new or not, if it’s nice, with easy access to public transport etc, moreover probably the landlord does not have enough knowledge about internet so this may be the only way to find that flat in particular, besides in the classic newspaper ads.

– student dormitories

The population of the metropolitan area of Tenerife increases by thousands during the school year and there is a high demand for rooms and beds from September to June in Santa Cruz and especially in La Laguna. In the center of the university town, single and double rooms are available in a large residency or dorms for students, with all the advantages of being in a youthful atmosphere. – Beware of internet fraud

Very important: there are many fake online ads renting flats in large cities, and in areas like Santa Cruz de Tenerife we can find sometimes very generic ads, with no specific details, just some significant area or tram stop nearby. When you contact the advertisers usually they ask you to send an amount of money as a deposit, promising to send the keys because they are abroad and making pressure telling that other people are interested and the price is very good. If you can, try to always see the house first, meet the owner or a responsible person and have a phone contact or the necessary details to re-contact him or her.
